Hello Wrestling Parents! My name is Karri Vaughan, my son Brady is a freshman, and I have volunteered to be the "team mom" for the TC West wrestling season. Our family has been involved with the Titan Pipeline wrestling club for the past 5 years and couldn't be more excited to now have a high school wrestler. I have been told we have many new athletes and families this year and are excited to share our love of this amazing sport. Although it may seem intimidating not knowing much about how wrestling "works", you will quickly learn and I am here to help. I am reaching out to all of you as there are a few things our athletes and coaches need from us to make this a successful season: Food Tables - each individual tournament is an all-day event. At these tournaments, each school has their own "food table" for wrestlers only. These tables are to provide nourishment and hydration to our athletes. Unlike other sports, wrestlers like to graze or snack in between matches and are less likely to sit down for a large meal. I have created a sign-up genius for the first 6 weeks and you can find the link below. Please sign up for at least 1 slot per tournament. You are to bring your item each week and find our table at the particular school. If you are not attending the tournament, please send your items with your wrestler on the bus. We will not be supplying a food table on Wednesday evening dual meets. Please provide your wrestler with a sack lunch, water and snacks for the evening. They may want to bring money for the ride home as the team will be stopping for dinner. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a044ba4ae2ea4f49-tcwest1 TC West Wrestling 2021/2022 Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you! www.signupgenius.com Holiday Tournament December 23rd- ALL HANDS-ON DECK! This is an all-day individual tournament that we host at West Senior High. I will be creating a separate sign-up for this tournament as we will need to supply concession volunteers, ticket takers, table help, towel tappers, 50/50, wrestlers' food table and referee food table. I will send a link ASAP. Hygiene - I know Coach Nyland has mentioned this before, but it is imperative our wrestlers are showering after each practice and meet. You may also consider Defense Wipes as they can use in them between matches. These make an excellent stocking stuffer. I cannot wait to get our season underway this week. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. There are no "stupid" questions as I relied on many other parents to navigate my first few years as a wrestling parent as well. Go Titans! Karri Rookie Wrestling Information Dual vs Individual Tournaments
1. This year's meet schedule can be found on the TC Wrestling website https://tcwestwrestling.weebly.com/ . Coach Nyland indicated that the (T) next to a date means that all wrestlers are invited to participate.
2. Each match is 3 periods of 2 minutes each.
3. Dual Meets a. Dual meets are a team event. We will compete with 1 wrestler in each weight class against another school. The team with the most combined points after all weight classes have competed wins. Dual meets are scored as follows: i. 3 points (decision) - a wrestler wins a match with most points. ii. 4 points (major) - wrestler wins by more than 10 points. iii. 5 points (tech) - wrestler wins by more than 15 points. iv. 6 points (pin/fall) - wrestler pins their opponent. 4. Individual Tournaments a. The all day individual tournaments are a different format. Each wrestler participating will be entered into a bracket based on their weight class and will compete as many times as it takes to complete the bracket. The more times your wrestler wins, the more chances they have to compete. Winning two before you lose two usually means the wrestler places. These tournaments are a great way to get more bouts and opportunities.
Food Table Examples 1. Hot dish - mac & cheese, sloppy joes, burritos (chicken and cheese), pasta dish, pulled pork, meatballs 2. Sandwiches - slider sized buns work the best. The athletes will not want to eat a large sub or sandwich, but rather a couple smaller sandwiches between matches throughout the day. Hawaiian rolls work great. I suggest turkey or ham and cheese. Please no condiments, I will have mayo and mustard they can add if wanted. PB&J - please cut sandwiches in quarters so the kids can grab a couple if wanted. 3. Fruit - while fruit is best (bananas, grapes, apples). Orange quarters are great too. Small cut up fruit is not as easy to eat. 4. Veggies - any cut up veggies and even individual hummus or dip to go with it would be great. 5. Snacks - No CHIPS. Trail mix, pretzels, goldfish. 6. Granola/Protein Bars - Any 7. Water/ Gatorade - although they can be difficult to find, the smaller 12oz bottles work best. Wrestlers do not like to chug a large amount of fluid and then have to go back out on the mat. If it’s a larger bottle they tend to drink half and the rest is wasted. 8. Breakfast - bagels and cream cheese are great. Yogurt/Gogurt - please send a small cooler with ice if your item needs to be refrigerated.
